In recognition of the importance of building the next generation of transit riders and making our province safe and accessible for youth, municipal governments in BC passed a resolution at the 2024 meeting of the UBCM (Union of BC Municipalities) asking the Province to grant free transit to all BC youth in grade 12 and under. This was a huge victory not only for BC’s youth, but also for the Victoria Transit Riders Union, as we lobbied hard for this resolution alongside the Centre For Family Equity and the many amazing youth who are involved in the Transit For Teens campaign.
But the work isn’t done yet, and we need your help now more than ever to make free teen transit a reality in BC!
The Province is not obliged to heed this request of BC’s local governments and there is a very real danger that they will seize upon the current economic uncertainty as an excuse to ignore it. To make sure that doesn’t happen, the Victoria Transit Riders Union has launched a letter writing campaign that makes it easy for you to let the Province know you support free teen transit and expect them to grant this request of BC’s municipalities.
Send your own letter to the Province! Please also share with others and urge them to support this important cause!
Next stop: fare-free and excellent transit for all!
