Victoria Transit Riders Union 2025 Activity Report

The Victoria Transit Riders Union has published our 2025 Annual Activity Report, highlighting a year of major growth, strong community engagement, and determined advocacy for fare-free, excellent, and truly public transit.

Building a rider-powered organization

In 2025 we expanded our presence through community events, tabling, media interviews, and active social media outreach. Our Spring Transit Celebration, growing newsletter list, and new alliances helped strengthen a broader community of transit riders in Greater Victoria.

Advancing fare-free transit

We launched a province-wide letter-writing campaign, opposed the April 1 fare hike and fare evasion crackdown, co-hosted an Earth Day rally, met with the Parliamentary Secretary for Transit, and supported the push for a CRD-wide youth bus pass. We also helped protect Victoria’s existing youth pass program from proposed cuts.

Standing with transit workers

VTRU played an active role in supporting Cowichan Valley transit workers during their historic 222‑day strike against Transdev. We attended rallies, organized a Worker–Rider Solidarity Rally, and helped amplify the voices of workers and riders. This work contributed to the formation of the Cowichan Valley Transit Riders Union.

Looking ahead

In 2026 we will focus on building a democratic membership structure, hosting more public events, expanding alliances, and continuing the fight for fare-free, excellent, and publicly owned transit across BC.
